Cut-It-Out Cakes!

star1
Instead of cupcakes this 4th of July, how about some cut-it-out cakes! What are cut-it-out cakes? Well, let me explain. This is just a regular cake mix in a box but the batter is baked in a 13X9 cookie sheet to create a thin layer of cake. With fun cookie cutters, I made little cutouts and layered the cake with a whipped cream cheese frosting. Whipped frosting works great for piping cakes.

Preheat the oven to 350F

Start with any box cake mix. Follow the ingredients on the box regarding the batter mix-ins.

Once all of the ingredients are mixed well, pour batter in to a greased 13X9 cookie sheet and bake for 13 minutes.

Let the cake cool for five minutes.

Once the cake has cooled, use a spatula to get under the cake to loosen it from the pan. Do this all under the bottom of the cake. After doing so, take your favorite cookie/cake cutters…

The cake should come out easily if you squeeze the metal cutter as you’re pulling the cake cutout up.

With the flower cutouts, I made a little layer cake. The stars were too small to use for layering. It’s possible, but it’s a bit wobbly. If you want to make a layer cutout, the cutout should have a large base to hold another cake on top.

To help fill a ziplock piping bag with frosting, place the bag in a small tumbler glass and fold the seal of the bag around the top of the glass…

Make a small snip at the corner of the piping bag, about a half-inch cut.

Piping the frosting on to the cake works much better than using a knife to spread on the frosting…

Decorate the cake with fruit or sprinkles! And don’t forget to let the kids help out! They’ll love it!
